Finished line-art drawing done a few weeks ago, of a being based on a cross between a Quilin and a Taotie; Two asian mythological beings more different from each other would be pretty difficult to imagine, though both appear to have the trait of protectiveness in common. Other references I used for the Taotie part include here ( dantrio.com ), which described the creature as possessing: "the head of a human, the body of a sheep or cow, the horn of a goat, eyes on the side of his chest, a tiger's teeth, the nails of a man", others here, here, here and here ( as well as the T-Chan totetsu character from Matsuri Akino's Pet Shop of Horrors ) generally suggest a creature with ram or goat-like horns ( I did see a version online with antler-like horns ), a fanged face that may or may not be human-like, clawed feet (at least on the forelegs), pointed ears, sometimes a beard & mane, and a long-ish tail.
For this mixed version, I chose to go with the Taotie ram horns, tiger-toothed human face, chest-eyes and clawed forelegs. The body scaling and hindquarters are from the Quilin part of him. I also gave him a three-horn combination ( my own choice ), the middle horn from the single-horned version of the Quilin, but goatlike & roughly spiralled, like some versions of the Taotie. I'll probably try doing a ' proper ', non-mixed version of a Taotie later on, since it's pretty hard to find naturalistic artwork of this creature ( outside of the Pet Shop of Horrors fandom ). Artline pen on paper; this will be moved into my scraps once a coloured & backgrounded version is done. Totetsu/Tao Tieh & Kirin/Quilin Traditional, this image (c) Me. |
